G4 mac finally retired
Well after much deliberation I finally decided to let my Dual G4 Quicksliver spend it’s last years in semi retirement. I pondered for months over the price / performance advantage a Mac Pro would have over a top of the line imac, but in the end the price of the imac was hard to resist.
I went for the top end 3.06Ghz 24 incher, with the better nvidia graphics card, so hopefully it won’t be out of date in a heartbeat. My old G4 has lasted around 4/5 years which is amazing considering how fast technology moves. I’ve upgraded my PC’s countless times in the same period, from Pentium 1,2 and 3′s to AMD chips, then to Core 2 Duo and finally to Quad cores, so the old G4 has done amazingly well to keep up in this company and i’ll be sad to see it go. I did upgrade the ram, graphics and USB on it over the years, but running Photoshop and the like it still was very usable.
I like I guess many others really was hanging out for some kind of middle ground mac, something that was upgradable, but not the bank busting investment a Mac Pro would be, who knows it could be just around the corner !
Initial indications are that the imac was a good move, it’s nice and quick and flicks between apps almost instantly, running it with ‘spaces’ enabled increases the already huge screen to make working really efficient, hopefully i’ve made the right choice. Only thing is I can’t see this mac lasting as long as my trusty G4 did.
