The all new Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi, which staged the final Grand Prix of the 2009 season had being branded by ripe ! The whole team have worked on everything from the initial logo, shown here, to restaurant menus, branded Porsche cars, and all the hotel marketing collateral. The initial pitch for the work was a significant challenge as some of the UK’s biggest branding agencies were pitching for the work, so it was quite an event when ripe heard the news that we’d beaten off some of the big boys.

Here’s the menu designs I produced for the various restaurants in the hotel. The idea was to create something with a high end feel, that was obviously part of a suite of menus, and had the flexibility to easily update the inner content as and when the menus changed.

Bahrian Bay updated sales pack design. The logo of Bahrain Bay is well known and respected in Bahrain. What isn’t widely known though is that the shapes and form of the B’s merging together is representative of the land meeting the sea. A very important part of the Bahrain culture. I wanted to use the curved shapes from within the logo to echo this sentiment, and to also bring a fluid, flowing water, feel to the brand. I used these shapes to form both a visual divide on printed material, and with the sales pack, I used the curves to form the actual divide where the pack opened.

Nurai is a super exclusive island complex with stunning homes built into the structure of the land. Nurai wanted a compete overhaul of their existing marketing material and messaging. The only things to stay were the Nurai logo and the Zaya logo. Everything else is all new.
The multi million pound homes are actually sculpted into the island. I used the flowing undulating line graphic as a key, subtle link to the forms of the homes throughout the design. As well as designing a marketing pack, a sales pack, all related print based materials, I also worked up designs for the brochure, an interactive presentation (supplied on the bespoke pebble USB stick), and even suggested a Nurai fragrance, exclusive to residents of the island.

The sales pack had to be something special, but still achievable within sensible budgets. I designed a heavy card enclosure, with a recess for the required brochure, an insert system for floorplans and spec information, as well as provision for the USB stick. Each brochure was personalised, and was sealed with a Zaya branded ribbon.

External 3d render of the brochure pack showing the line work design details as well as the Zaya ribbon.

When someone is buying into such a luxury lifestyle, they want something unique – the Nurai fragrance, exclusive to home owners on Nurai.

The USB stick is designed around the from of a pebble. It’s tactile and in keeping with the spirit of the island.

A 3d illustration for the cover of the National Friendly report and account.
This image was created for the smashing chaps at huetaminto. They had designed some excellent work for National Friendly and wanted to take that work into 3d to grace the cover of the report and accounts. The guys supplied me with some great visuals of how they wanted the piece to look, as well as the textures and required graphics and I built the whole thing in 3d.
It was a great process, as the image came to life and we continually improved it and polished it to the version you see here. The final image was supplied at very high resolution to ensure we captured all the detail in the image.

The logo was a mix of a few initial designs, produced by myself and Mick Backhouse, a senior designer at ripe. We wanted to show the amazing form of the building, together with the shroud that covers parts of the building. Also, as the hotel spans the actual racetrack, we wanted to show how the hotel reaches across the track, and how the track passes under the hotel. Shown here is the final 2d logo, derived from a 3d illustration created in 3ds Max. As the logo needed to be ‘built’ to be shown inside the hotel, I needed to supply cad files of how to build the logo, as the sweeping nature of the overlapping curves and shroud are quite complicated.

This is a piece of freelance design & 3d visualisation work for i to i travel. Basically they have bought 2 camper vans and are using them for mobile marketing & promotions. The brief was to design the vans, both inside and out, and visualise how they would look for client approval. This was to include all graphic design elements, interior design and accessories / internal storage etc. This is one of the van styles I designed and is the ’surf van’. The Camper van was modeled in 3D Studio max and all graphics were created in Photoshop and Illustrator. Find out more about i-to-i here www.i-to-i.com

These camper vans are now built and on the road visiting universities and events across the country to promote the i-to-i travel offerings. Below is the design for the corporate camper van. This is the style that i-to-i decided to go with. Initially they wanted a few different stlyes of van, hence all the work, but in the end they liked the corporate one so much that they decided to just go with that.

The images above show how I designed the inside of the camper van with the rear seats turned around to create a meeting room / space inside the van. Additionally storage units were built into the base of the seating. The double side door also featured storage and display areas for promotional material and when both doors were opened, I designed a ‘roof’ section that spanned the doors to create some shelter when the van was being used with the doors opened all day.

Below is a graphic that shows the different accessories that would be used on the different kinds of camper vans, i.e the surfboard on the ’surf’ van and the suitcases on the safari van. I visited a Volkswagen camper van meet in Halifax and met with lots of people to gain an insight into the camper van world. I took lots of pictures for inspiration to help me with the designs for the different vans.

A set of 3d ads for the Halifax Bank of Scotland.
These ads were a freelance 3d project created for work group plc., for the Halifax Bank of Scotland, created entirely in 3d, these are just a few from the set created for the latest recruitment ads. These are just a handful of the ads created from quite a large set.

Initially the client’s idea was to photograph a significant amount of the imagery for the ads, but thankfully they also considered 3d modeling and rendering too. When I spoke with them, we discussed the possibility of creating all the actual ‘YOU’ text models in 3D and then photoshopping them into photographed scenes that would be shot traditionally. I felt this may work, but could end up being more work than actually creating everything in 3D. Also keeping everything 3D would allow flexibility if we needed to change things as the work progressed, something traditional photography wouldn’t allow !

I did some initial tests completely 3D designed, and these showed that we would get the results the client was looking for, so the decision was mad to go all 3D, nice.

<img src=""/wp/wp-content/uploads/3d/you/youad2.jpg" alt="Advertisment for the Halifax Bank of Scotland" />

This one was one of my favorites as it was quite tricky to set up. You can’t really see all the detail here, but there is lots in the edges of the sand around the letters. The YOU sandcastle was created by displacing a high poly mesh and then a number of high-resolution textures, bump and displacement maps were drawn in photoshop. Vray displacement mapping was used to create the subtle ‘crumbly’ edges to the 3D letters.

A recent job for the nice people over at <a href="http://brandfuel.co.uk"target="_blank">Brandfuel These guys had a few ideas and the odd sketch of where they wanted to go with a design for Harmon Kardon and their Pro and Consumer ranges of products. They needed somone to run with the design and produce some scale drawings and renders of the work to show to the client, which is where I came into the picture. This was a great project to work on, but it required lots of research and understanding about the products and planning of how the stand would work.

I thought it would be nice to show the clients sketches on this one to give you an idea of the kind of things I usually have to work with, these were good as at least I didn’t have to start from scratch on this one, and after a lengthy conversation with a couple of the guys over at Brandfuel, I had a good idea of how to move forwards with the design.

Side view of the stand, it was quite a big one this, 23m x 15m.

This 3d render (with the roof removed) shows how the 4 meeting rooms work and how the 2 studio setups sit nicely inside the space. The basic idea is that people can walk through this central section when crossing from the Pro products across to the consumer products area. It was designed to encourage people to see the Pro Studio equipment that will be displayed centrally. Additionally the meeting rooms can all see into the central area, so the people in them can watch the studio demonstrations that are taking place.

This is some early idea generation work for Garmin, for a modular exhibition stand design solution, using interchangeable and interlocking display units that can easily be adapted for different product needs. The main units have a sliding display arm fixing that allows different fixings to be added to the display units for different products. The tops are also interchangeable so that the overall look of the units can change for say, a marine show, an outdoor show, or a motorbike show.

One of the larger units with a front graphic panel and a range of products on display.

A visual showing the different interchangeable tops.

A visual showing a selection of the units and an example of how they can interlock.

A 3d visual showing a breakdown of the modular elements that make up the units.

A 3d visual showing a bespoke unit design.

Finally a 3d render of a stand design showing the large lightbox based pyramid structure included on the stand which also doubles up as storage and a shop / customer service point.

Part of a much larger body of work for <a href="http://ripe.co.uk"target="_blank">ripe this is an early visual to show how the old ILVA building in Manchester could be converted into ‘The Urban Market’ shopping centre. All I had to work with were a few photos of the space as it currently exists, so I simply guessed the sizes of the spaces based on common sense and comparing the odd dimension we did have from a site visit.

This is a photo of how the space really looked !
