The Yas Hotel – menus

The all new Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi, which staged the final Grand Prix of the 2009 season had being branded by ripe ! The whole team have worked on everything from the initial logo, shown here, to restaurant menus, branded Porsche cars, and all the hotel marketing collateral. The initial pitch for the work was a significant challenge as some of the UK’s biggest branding agencies were pitching for the work, so it was quite an event when ripe heard the news that we’d beaten off some of the big boys.

Here’s the menu designs I produced for the various restaurants in the hotel. The idea was to create something with a high end feel, that was obviously part of a suite of menus, and had the flexibility to easily update the inner content as and when the menus changed.

Bahrain Bay sales pack

Bahrian Bay updated sales pack design. The logo of Bahrain Bay is well known and respected in Bahrain. What isn’t widely known though is that the shapes and form of the B’s merging together is representative of the land meeting the sea. A very important part of the Bahrain culture. I wanted to use the curved shapes from within the logo to echo this sentiment, and to also bring a fluid, flowing water, feel to the brand. I used these shapes to form both a visual divide on printed material, and with the sales pack, I used the curves to form the actual divide where the pack opened.

Nurai Ultra high end homes

Nurai is a super exclusive island complex with stunning homes built into the structure of the land. Nurai wanted a compete overhaul of their existing marketing material and messaging. The only things to stay were the Nurai logo and the Zaya logo. Everything else is all new.
The multi million pound homes are actually sculpted into the island. I used the flowing undulating line graphic as a key, subtle link to the forms of the homes throughout the design. As well as designing a marketing pack, a sales pack, all related print based materials, I also worked up designs for the brochure, an interactive presentation (supplied on the bespoke pebble USB stick), and even suggested a Nurai fragrance, exclusive to residents of the island.

The sales pack had to be something special, but still achievable within sensible budgets. I designed a heavy card enclosure, with a recess for the required brochure, an insert system for floorplans and spec information, as well as provision for the USB stick. Each brochure was personalised, and was sealed with a Zaya branded ribbon.

When someone is buying into such a luxury lifestyle, they want something unique – the Nurai fragrance, exclusive to home owners on Nurai.

The USB stick is designed around the from of a pebble. It’s tactile and in keeping with the spirit of the island.

3d You ads for the Halifax

A set of 3d ads for the Halifax Bank of Scotland.
These ads were a freelance 3d project created for work group plc., for the Halifax Bank of Scotland, created entirely in 3d, these are just a few from the set created for the latest recruitment ads. These are just a handful of the ads created from quite a large set.

Initially the client’s idea was to photograph a significant amount of the imagery for the ads, but thankfully they also considered 3d modeling and rendering too. When I spoke with them, we discussed the possibility of creating all the actual ‘YOU’ text models in 3D and then photoshopping them into photographed scenes that would be shot traditionally. I felt this may work, but could end up being more work than actually creating everything in 3D. Also keeping everything 3D would allow flexibility if we needed to change things as the work progressed, something traditional photography wouldn’t allow !

I did some initial tests completely 3D designed, and these showed that we would get the results the client was looking for, so the decision was mad to go all 3D, nice.

This one was one of my favorites as it was quite tricky to set up. You can’t really see all the detail here, but there is lots in the edges of the sand around the letters. The YOU sandcastle was created by displacing a high poly mesh and then a number of high-resolution textures, bump and displacement maps were drawn in photoshop. Vray displacement mapping was used to create the subtle ‘crumbly’ edges to the 3D letters.

Walker Modular 3d Bathroom pods

This is some early and speculative work I produced for Walker Modular. These guys make bathroom pods that slot straight into a building, with all the services already plumbed in so they are ready to go. I visited the factory and it’s really impressive (and secret) how they create a bathroom pod from a single mould. Apparently the materials used in the pods is the as they use on million pound Sunseeker Yachts, so it’s pretty technical stuff.

The brief was to look at how the many kinds of bathroom pods could be visualised in 3d as opposed to traditional photography, as it’s really tricky to photograph a pod as you can’t remove a wall to take a picture. Obviously using 3d design and visualisation, you can remove a wall and render out an appropriate view.

In addition to the 3d design side of things, new printed material is required too as is a new logo as the old one wasn’t quite as polished as it could be.

Ripe property brochure

This is the long awaited property brochure from ripe. It contains lots of my work at ripe over the last couple of years and is a great showcase of the breadth of property specific design work produced at ripe. This brochure is squarely aimed at larger larger property agencies and developers and contains all manner of projects, from the V&A Waterfront in Cape town through to things a little closer to home like the award winning work produced for Greenquarter in Manchester. It showcases both print design (obviously as it’s a brochure :) s well as showing many of the more involved projects that required interior and exhibition design, as well as marketing suite design and motion graphics / av work.

Tower Grand design

This is a batch of work from the early rounds of designing an identity for a shopping centre in Wigan called Tower Grand for the Modus Group. It wasn’t called Tower Grand when we visited the building site, it was pretty much a blank canvas, so the first thing I designed was the name and the logo / colurways and then the visual style. The shopping centre is moving along as a pace now and Tower Grand is a firmly established name in the area.

To compliment some of the art-deco textures used in the brochure design, I visualised these launch / invite bags in 3d using the same textures. The idea was that these champagne / wine bags could be used as invites to the launch party.

Bensons Icepops.

Here’s some early 3d packaging design & visuals for Bensons Ice pops. The designs have matured a blittle now and are sitting pretty in selected shops as I write this ! As with quite a bit of the work on my site, the ice pop packaging images are not photo’s, they are my trusty friend 3d, modeled in 3d Studio Max and rendered in Vray. I was particularly pleased with the ‘ice’ texture I created for the actual ice pop, it looked almost good enough to eat !

Muse corporate identity

Great project this. Muse is a new company, born from AMEC developments. The design brief for Muse was pretty much a blank canvas, the brand, positioning, graphic style etc all needed to be set. I produced a detailed corporate guideline document as well as many new design assets for use by the brand at launch.

Media City Uk

Some work from a recent pitch win for ripe to secure the work for Media City in Manchester. This will be an amazing place and will the the North’s hot bed of creative talent. It’s also a new home for the BBC. The work shown here is a mix of a handful of peoples work, this was a real team effort with people all working to their strengths.
