Their client – Hasbro wanted a fun installation designing and building to show their new ‘Boom-Box’ system to their in house staff. Hasbro have a huge walkway that has numerous large installations to showcase many of their products, and this one needed to be something special.

Here’s the photo of the location for the installation. I used this photo in the 3D scene and matched the model into it.

Here’s the very quick sketch I sent over to the client to show them how I saw the space ship idea working.

Another render, this time from front on with a 3D wall to the rear as I didn’t have a photo from this angle.

And finally a set of images I produced for the fabricators to use as size guides. The whole unit was built and modelled to scale from the outset as it was important to consider the touchscreen mounting and obviously ensure the spaceship was big enough for people to walk under the front hull / nose cone without hitting it !

How times have changed !http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/blog/how-times-have-changed/ http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/blog/how-times-have-changed/#comments Sun, 29 May 2011 18:37:07 +0000 Andy http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/?p=1060 My old college room and LCIII

Proper blast from the past this. I was having a clear out at home and found my old negatives, so I had a scan though and found this one of my old room mate – Andy Ward doing some work on my trusty mac LCIII.

I thought it would be fun to label up a few of the items in the photo, i’m sure anyone of my era will remember the old macs, and some even older ones like the classics. Mine was a cutting edge LCIII, with a whopping 8 meg of ram! Today 1 or 2 gig is minimal, that’s 1000 meg, or 2000 meg! The hard drive was only 80meg, that’s nothing by today’s standards. A single photoshop file is routinely bigger than the entire capacity of my old mac….

The most crazy part is, the mac cost me around £3000, with a black and white ‘stylewriter’ that was an A4 inkjet printer.

I only recently parted with it, donating it – along with a load of other old IT stuff to a charity group in Castleford. I’m sure it will have being no use to them really – but I couldn’t bear to take it to the skip !

How things have changed :)

CSC 3D globehttp://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/csc-3d-globe/ http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/csc-3d-globe/#comments Mon, 11 Apr 2011 09:27:35 +0000 Andy http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/?p=1037 This was a great project, created for Our Agency. One of their senior designer contacted me with a proposed project to create a populated 3D globe based on some initial design work they had created. The actual creation of the cut away globe proved to be quite a challenge, before even getting round to placing all the buildings on it. I produced some ‘proof of concept’ work to show Owen at Our Agency how the globe would look and then we began looking at the right kind of buildings to populate the globe. Each building represented an area of the client’s business.

This project arrived at a very busy time, right ahead of Christmas, thankfully my favourite 3D buddy Richard Hinchcliffe offered to jump in and help with the 3D building creation, so we worked on populating the globe together. The final 3D image was created super high res, so the client could use areas of it in different ways and crop into it.

Here’s a closer view of an area of the globe. We created lots of new images of the globe, with different placement of buildings for use on the CSC website.

Here’s the final sketch that the client created to show how the whole piece needed to look and feel.

B&Q Sustain – It Gameshttp://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/bq-sustain-it-game/ http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/bq-sustain-it-game/#comments Fri, 08 Apr 2011 15:48:36 +0000 Andy http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/?p=1027 This was part of a large project to create all game graphics for 2 games for B&Q. The games are educational and help children learn about saving energy. I enlisted help from my pal Richard Hinchcliffe to work with me to deliver this large project, as there was lots to do and a tight deadline.

We worked together using Skype and Dropbox, to allow us to work collaboratively on all elements of the project. The work was produced for Leeds agency – Digital Welly.

Here’s a link to play both games.

B&Q game graphics

B&Q game graphics

Each room in the house had a number of different ‘states’ which required a number of 3D renders to be created for each room. For example, in the bedroom we had a version with the curtains open and the curtains closed, as these were key options in the game. Each room had 2 or 3 states, where the user could change things in the room. In addition each room had a number of ‘hot spots’ which were also used within the game.

Here’s a couple of images of the 1st Game showing some of the interface elements, as well as the little 3d animated pig who lets you know if you have answered the questions correctly or not !

B&Q game graphics

All the ‘hotspot’ images in the game were also created in 3D. The meant we had to create quite a large library of 3D assets ranging from bath and showers, to things like compost bins and solar panels.

NJ Screenprints Packhttp://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/nj-screenprints-pack/ http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/nj-screenprints-pack/#comments Fri, 25 Mar 2011 15:49:59 +0000 Andy http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/?p=1021 This was part of a larger body of work produced with Fastfloor multimedia for their client NJ Packaging. Fastfloor had recently rebranded NJ Screen printers and the logo was the primary visual reference I had to design and visualise a presentation pack to include brochures / samples and an interactive DVD (another project I worked on for Fastfloor). I designed the pack based around the shape of one of the elements from the logo, in addition I quickly designed a number of layouts for the pack content.

Google Android Exhibition Standhttp://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/google-android-exhibition-stand/ http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/google-android-exhibition-stand/#comments Fri, 25 Mar 2011 15:39:27 +0000 Andy http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/?p=1015 This was a really nice – but very tight deadline piece of work produced for the nice people over at BrandFuel. The brief was to design and visualise a large exhibition stand based around an ‘egg’ concept. The initial ideas were very embryonic (forgive the pun) and I had artistic licence to design the pods as well as really bring the space to life. As the turnaround was very tight on this work, some areas were rushed and don’t have the level of detail i’d like to show, but the pods turned out well and the whole work was very well received by both Brand Fuel and the client – google.

posterous.comhttp://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/blog/posterous-com/ http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/blog/posterous-com/#comments Thu, 24 Feb 2011 16:26:27 +0000 Andy http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/?p=1011 I have started having a play with the very impressive posterous blogging platform. The really nice thing is that the whole system is e-mail based. Yes you can log-in and have lots of control, but at it’s base level you e-mail posts / pictures and video to posterous and the it’s formatted and published automatically – nice.

I thought it would be fun to keep a little blog / diary for my family. Now that I finally bought myself an iphone, I can take pictures and video and post them up to posterous straight from my phone via the nifty posterous iphone app :)

posterous iphone image

So far it’s fun, but trying to remember to keep it up to date is tricky. I’m not a ‘blogger’ so i’m having to try to keep it fresh. The idea is that it will be a nice thing to look back on in a few years when the kids are older – a kind of diary of events with pictures and video’s. Let’s hope posterous is still around in a few years time.

Garmin universal product standhttp://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/garmin-universal-product-stand/ http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/garmin-universal-product-stand/#comments Thu, 24 Feb 2011 16:18:23 +0000 Andy http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/?p=1006 Another project for Gamin. This time designing a universal product stand that could be used at any number of events and exhibitions. The unit had to be adaptable, scaleable and work for a large range of different sized products. I designed a unit that used interchangeable tops and devised a neat power line system in the centre of the unit to allow all the products to hook up easily. In addition graphics and brochures were catered for as well as AV using LCD screens running product presentations from flash cards.

Piz Buin Display’shttp://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/piz-buin-displays/ http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/work/3d/piz-buin-displays/#comments Fri, 18 Feb 2011 16:10:11 +0000 Andy http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/?p=983 I little while ago I designed a large series of modular display stands for Piz Buin’s new range of ski suncreams – yes you read that right, sun cream for skier’s ! Apparently it’s very different from normal suncream. I started by creating 3d models of the products so that I could populate my stand designs, I then looked at designing a number of modular tray units that could easily be used with the stands. In addition I designed all the supporting graphics and unit structures.

Crazy busy this Christmas.http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/blog/crazy-busy-this-christmas/ http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/blog/crazy-busy-this-christmas/#comments Thu, 02 Dec 2010 08:58:44 +0000 Andy http://www.andrewshillito.com/wp/blog/crazy-busy-this-christmas/ The last couple of months have seen me burning quite a lot of midnight oil. I’ve being doing my teaching course, teaching 2 days a week at the college, setting and assessing assignments and trying to fit in a lot of my own work too. To top it all off, my 3 children have all being unwell, and I finally succumbed to the dreaded cold bug that was doing the rounds !

On a positive note, I’ve produced some nice work which I’ll upload to my site as soon as I get some time. I’ve helped produce some nice visuals for a huge exhibition stand for Google Andriod, I’ve designed a series of exhibition stands for Equinox Design in Leeds, and I’m working on some nice work for Hasbro. So all go really, lots of other things on at the moment too so I’ve got one of my top design buddies, Richard Hinchcliffe working with me to help out.

All good, but looking forward to having a break over Christmas.. Hopefully.
